Deep Creek Campground
FS Road 1808
June 16 - 17 2007 - A Mountaineers backpack. The weather forecast called for rain showers and cool temperatures, and for once it was accurate. We met at Chinook Pass and set out for Twin Sisters Lakes, only to discover a "Road Closed" sign at the Pear Butte trailhead that warned the bridge was out 1.9 miles ahead. Not to be cheated of our backpack trip, we set off along the road, and two sloppy stream crossings and 3 downed trees later, we arrived at Deep Creek Campground, about 4 1/2 miles from where the road was closed. There were patches of snow up here, and with evening fast approaching, we reached a consensus and claimed some prime spots in the Deep Creek Campground instead of continuing up to Twin Sisters Lakes. After setting up camp, we set about the serious task of preparing our evening meals. Various camp stoves were produced and dehydrated food emerged from backpacks, but we were all surprised--and absolutely delighted--by the miniature grill, complete with steaks and jumbo shrimp, that Len shared with us. After dinner, the cold, damp conditions put an early end to the day.
It was still cold and raining lightly when we got up the next morning, so after breakfast we broke camp and headed home. We'll save Twin Sisters Lakes for another day! Although we did not hike to our planned destination, a good time was had by all.
