Esmerelda Basin

Trail No. 1394

Elevation 6000' - 7 miles roundtrip

JULY 1, 2006  -  It was a warm, sunny day when we left the trailhead, elevation 4243'.  The trail ascends gently through forest and meadows for the first couple of miles before beginning a series of switchbacks.  The wildflowers were out in abundance on the day we hiked it, and the views of Esmerelda Peaks were lovely.  A few snow patches remained along the trail, and there were many small streams that flowed across the trail.  After lunch we decided to take Trail No. 1226.2 towards Lake Ann rather than continue on to Fortune Pass.  This trail climbs in steep, tight switchbacks until it reaches a meadow at elevation 6100'.  We encountered snow on the trail just beyond the meadow, and not being properly equiped for snow, we began our return trip.
