Beacon Rock State Park

WTA Work Party - Hardy Ridge

April 7 - 8, 2007  - A WTA weekend work party at Beacon Rock State Park.  It was a rainy day when we hiked a "Henry 1/2 mile" up a casual trail to Hardy Ridge.  The work site when we arrived on Saturday morning was little more than a faint path through vegetation marked by orange flags.  The view west to the Columbia River remained under cloud and fog most of the day, and it rained and hailed, and was altogether a very wet day.  Half of the crew took the scenic route down from the work site at the end of our shift on Saturday, where we saw a juvenile bald eagle.  It flew over us, circled back, and flew over us again before circling the other half of our group.  Obviously it had never seen a hard hat before!  Dinner was pot-luck style, eaten mostly in silence.  Good food and good appetites!  A campfire and a cozy tent put an end to a long day.

The sun was shining when we got up on Sunday morning, and we gained new crew members to replace those who left us on Saturday evening.  The Easter Bunny hid plastic eggs filled with candy for us to find along the trail as we hiked back up to the ridge.  The views from the work site were spectacular on Sunday, and we ate our lunch  on a grassy bald overlooking the Columbia River.  We wrapped up the day just as the weather began to turn wet again, packed up, and headed home.  A great time was had by all, and another 219 feet of trail was born.
